Introduction:
Unigroup's June 2000 meeting will be a special DEVELOPERS meeting at a SPECIAL MIDTOWN LOCATION. Our meeting is hosted by WestLake Internet Training, our speaker for this meeting. WestLake has offered us the use of one of their training rooms for a true hands-on Perl development "mini-training" course. The topic for this session is Perl and Web-to-Database Integration.
Perl is a very popular utility and language which is available on Unix and Non-Unix operating systems. It is freely available under the GNU license and has been ported to a variety of systems including Unix, MS-Windows and OpenVMS. Perl is a single program which is comprises a superset of functionality based on the following Unix Utilities: awk, ed, grep, sed, sh & tr mixed with functionality from the C programming language. It supports loadable modules, Unix System Calls, Networking (Sockets) and Object Oriented Functionality. There are hundreds of freely available Perl Modules which provide everything from native Internet Protocol Support (FTP, POP, SMTP, SNMP) through Database Integration (Informix, Oracle, Sybase, etc).

WestLake will be holding a drawing for one of the O'Reilly Perl textbooks that they hand out in their open-enrollment classes. WestLake will be providing food and refreshments for this meeting.
Description of Talk:
Our meeting will be a hands-on mini-course on Web-to-Database Integration with Perl. Perl, Web CGI Scripting and Perl's DBI modules will be used to demonstrate how to integrate real-time information from an existing database with a Web site.

Speaker Biography:
John Paxton joined WestLake Internet Training Training as an Internet Trainer in 1997. He is the Director of Trainers for WestLake's Washington, DC and Arlington, VA offices and oversees several of WestLake's course lines. Currently, he manages the Active Server Pages course line and parts of the Perl course line.
