  Introduction:
  -------------

Unigroup's June 2000 meeting will be a special DEVELOPERS meeting at a
SPECIAL MIDTOWN LOCATION. Our meeting is hosted by WestLake Internet
Training, our speaker for this meeting. WestLake has offered us the use of
one of their training rooms for a true hands-on Perl development
"mini-training" course. The topic for this session is Perl and
  Web-to-Database Integration.

Perl is a very popular utility and language which is available on Unix and
Non-Unix operating systems. It is freely available under the GNU license and
has been ported to a variety of systems including Unix, MS-Windows and
OpenVMS. Perl is a single program which is comprises a superset of
functionality based on the following Unix Utilities: awk, ed, grep, sed, sh
and tr mixed with functionality from the C programming language. It supports
loadable modules, Unix System Calls, Networking (Sockets) and Object
Oriented Functionality. There are hundreds of freely available Perl Modules
which provide everything from native Internet Protocol Support (FTP, POP,
SMTP, SNMP) through Database Integration (Informix, Oracle, Sybase, etc).

  Web Resources:

CPAN: Comprehensive Perl Archive Network http://www.cpan.org
  Perl Mongers http://www.perl.org
  Perl Monger User Groups http://www.pm.org
  Apache/Perl Integration Project http://perl.apache.org

  Food & Giveaways:

WestLake will be holding a drawing for one of the O'Reilly Perl textbooks
that they hand out in their open-enrollment classes. WestLake will be
providing food and refreshments for this meeting.

  ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

  Description of Talk:
  --------------------

Our meeting will be a hands-on mini-course on Web-to-Database Integration
with Perl. Perl, Web CGI Scripting and Perl's DBI modules will be used to
demonstrate how to integrate real-time information from an existing database
  with a Web site.

  Topics to be explored:

     * Architectures for Web-to-Database Integration and pros and cons of
       each.
     * Perl 5 and Database Connectivity Modules. Perl 5, in contrast to Perl 4,
supports object-oriented programming, as well as plug-in modules that
extend Perl 5's functionality. Perl 5's object-oriented features and
the DBI.pm module will be used to query and post-process data in UNIX
       SQL databases.
     * Adding, Searching, Editing, and Deleting Database Records. Working with
Perl 5 CGI scripts that provide facilities to add, search, edit, and
delete records stored in a SQL database. The generation of "on the fly"
HTML tables for the display of results will also be explored.

The full course (as opposed to the mini-course) is outlined by WestLake's
  Course Outline Page:

We are updating and reworking our membership database. If you will be
