------------------------------------------------------
Speaker: James Licata,
Enterasys Networks
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS:
---------------------
* IN ORDER TO PASS THROUGH SECURITY EASILY, WE NEED YOU TO RSVP
* PRIOR TO THURSDAY, SO WE CAN GET YOUR NAME ON THE ATTENDEE LIST.
* It is probably also a good idea to bring photo ID with you in
* case security needs to see it.
Each person NOT on the attendee list will have to be escorted
individually from the lobby. Once the presentation begins, it
will obviously be very difficult for our speakers to escort you
up. The answer is to RSVP early and try to arrive early!
Please RSVP if you know you are attending or if you think you may
be attending (let us know which too). This will help us arrange
for a letter to security for all of Unigroup. It will also help
us to determine the correct amount of food and refreshments.
To REGISTER for this event, please RSVP by sending an EMail
containing the FIRST and LAST NAMEs of the persons attending to
the Unigroup RSVP address:
unigroup-rsvp@unigroup.org
You may optionally include your contact phone number (that day)
or other current information. Please continue to check the
Unigroup web site:
http://www.unigroup.org
for any last minute updates concerning this meeting.
Preview Demonstration:
----------------------
Enterasys describes their wireless demonstration as "elegant".
They will demonstrate how wireless is used to provide services
for real working environments as well as describing the diagnostic
and sight survey tools required to set up a new environment.
They can also demonstrate their VPN over wireless technology.
Keep in mind that some wireless networks span miles and require
special directional antennas to achieve high transmission speeds.
Providing a (low speed) wireless 11Mb LAN in a small office is
just the beginning. Faster wireless technology exceeding 50Mb
is about to be released.
Meeting Introduction:
---------------------
Enterasys (formerly Cabletron) sells the Dragon Intrusion
Detection System (IDS) product, which has received good reviews
recently in the trade magazines.

freely available Snort IDS visit the web sites listed below.

Description of Talk:
--------------------
This meeting will be a technology briefing, discussion and an
introduction to Intrusion Detection Systems and how they fit into a
"best practices" approach to network security.
Security is a process, not a product, and requires a best practices
approach. A survey last November found that 81% of all security IT
breaches were from Internal sources (FBI/CIA survey November 2000).
This trend is set to continue worldwide. In February'00, there were
two security breaches a day reported via Internet hacking.
February'01 has seen an increase to 15 breaches per day (daily
figures can be obtained from attrition.org).
For many people, deploying Firewalls is sufficient to form a security
"gate", but understanding how to defend in depth can reduce the
incidence of security breaches.
Firewalls are complex devices that produce multiple log files,
Intrusion detection systems go one stage further than firewalls and
can reduce the log files and produce more tailored reports suitable
to your individual needs.
